Six days after his inauguration, President Biden quietly nixed the policy enacted by President Trump that would require American universities to reveal cooperation with China’s Confucius Institute lest they lose certification for the Student and Exchange Visitor Program.

Why it matters:

  • Secretary of State Mike Pompeo labeled the center that manages the Confucius Institutes in the United States “an entity advancing Beijing’s global propaganda and malign influence.”
  • Biden’s actions have returned Beijing’s propaganda and malign influence to American universities.
